Derek Bryson Park was born and raised in New York City. His father, Dr. Lewis Charles Park (1908–1987), was a distinguished Doctor of Internal Medicine, a senior executive at one of the largest advertising agencies in the world on Madison Avenue, and a pioneering psychotherapist and psychiatrist who played a significant role in the early professionalization of psychotherapy in the United States. As a founding member and long-term leader of the Association for the Advancement of Psychotherapy, established in 1939 to advance psychotherapeutic methods among medical professionals and create a forum for interdisciplinary progress, Dr. Park was instrumental in bridging traditional medicine with evolving psychotherapeutic practices. He played a critical role in the association's early growth and contributed to the scholarly discourse of the era, focusing on the practical and clinical applications of psychotherapy within general medical practice. One of his frequently cited works, titled "Psychotherapy in General Practice," was published in the American Journal of Psychotherapy, where he advocated for the integration of psychotherapy into general medical care, emphasizing the importance of addressing the emotional and psychological aspects of health. In addition to his contributions to psychotherapy, he served as President of the New York Diabetes Association, promoting a holistic approach to diabetes management that recognized the psychosomatic challenges faced by patients. Dr. Park’s dedication to community health was recognized with a Medical Award from President Richard Nixon, underscoring his impact on both local and national medical standards. His mother, Vera E. Park, was a health care professional, and his brother is a triple board certified physician, showcasing a family legacy in the fields of medicine, psychiatry, and the advertising industry.

Derek Bryson Park attended Bishop’s College School, Lennoxville, P.Q. Canada; Croydon Country Day School, Jamaica Estates, NY; P.S. 99 Kew Gardens School, NY; and The Kew-Forest School, Forest Hills, NY. After his secondary education, he attended Western University, London, Ontario, Canada and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1977. In 1979, he earned an MPA from the New York University Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, a Ph.D. from the New York University Graduate School of Arts and Science in 1982, and successfully completed the International Housing Finance Program, The Wharton Real Estate Center, University of Pennsylvania in 2001; and a Postgraduate Degree from The General Theological Seminary in 2007.

His hobbies include tennis, squash, baseball, extreme travel, bank note collecting (“notaphilist”), history (political, financial and military) and a love for comedy genres in virtually all its forms.

From 2004 to 2005, Park was appointed (and reported directly to) the Apostolic Nuncio (Senior Ambassador) of the Holy See (“The Vatican”), H.E. Archbishop Celestino Migliore, joining the ranks of the five-member delegation allotted to each nation-state within the United Nations. In this role, he focused primarily on the adoption and implementation of a worldwide resolution specific to “Preventing, Combating, and Eradicating the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects."
